Furniture made of any of these forests, but fine for internal use, will not last beyond the drenching rain or heavy sun. For part of the outdoor furniture to confront the devastation of nature – even in relatively mild, balmy climate – it must be made of wood with some natural resistance to rot and insects.

Woods work in two very different ways to resist decay. Some, such as redwood, cypress and cedar (cedar has many), contains chemical compounds that bugs, bacteria and other representatives of decomposition find offensive, so they seek their food elsewhere.

Other woods such as white oak and black locust are rot to physical barriers, structures called tyloses, which fill the pores of the wood, preventing moisture and rot, causing creatures that thrive in moisture in the tree to fall in the first place in outdoor furniture. In both cases, chemical or natural, the result is the same – these forests face the elements season after season.

So what other forests are sufficiently resistant to decay, which are used for garden furniture? Well, there are many, but they just do not fall into two main categories: sleepers – domestic species, which are more commonly associated with fine furniture – and tropical species.

The first category is quite small. In addition to the previously mentioned white oak and black cherry and black walnut are relatively rot resistant, actually on a par with some of the cedar. Due to the expense of these forests, although they are rarely used for garden furniture.
